Knee ligament surgery is dedicated to repair knee ligaments damage caused by injury. Mild to moderate injury such as whilst rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament that is common from skiing is no need surgery treatment but multiple ligaments rupture that cause serious problem if it not treated well. If somehow the accident make the artery which located near to the knee is torn, then a knee surgery is needed to re-establish the blood supply to the organs below the knee.
In knee ligament surgery a graft is extracted from another part of patient knee, or it can provided from artificial knee material to fixed in area of the affected ligaments. This graft may also come from a donor. The procedure commonly recommended to patient who experience injuries as stated above that can cause severe effects such as swelling, restricted movement and extreme pain.
To perform this knee surgery, usually the surgeon will first examine the patient overall health condition including infection possibilities from another part of patient body. Once everything is okay, the procedure may be held. The surgeon will make small incisions to place tolls on the knee. One of the benefits of this surgery compared to other surgery is only involve small and minimum incisions.
Once the incision made, a micro camera is inserted to monitoring the inside of the knee and the knee ligament surgery is held with image from the camera as guidance. The torn ligament then treated and the knee is prepared for the replacement graft. Since this knee surgery only involve small incisions this made the recovery time become faster compared with other type of knee surgery.
Complications of knee ligament surgery
This knee repairing procedure is not always end with success procedure. Sometime in several cases there are surgical failures. A study reported that the complication of knee surgery could be happen. Below is some complication that could happen to the patient after the surgery,
1. Poor result in artificial grafts. Low quality of artificial grafts may lead to serious complications in the future. Caring medical website reported that patients with the ligament grafts are profoundly weakened about eight weeks after surgery and only 50 percent of initial strength after one year.
2. Pain remains after surgery. In several patients with knee ligament surgery, pain stay much longer than the average. This prolong pain may indicate a failure of the ligament graft integrity over the time.
