Home cholesterol test kits are easy to get over the counter and you can get it with affordable price and much less cheap compared to regular lab test procedure. It easy to carry make you can test your cholesterol level everywhere. But over all those features, the big questions are they accurate enough? And can the lab test replaced by these home lest kits?
According to Mayo Clinic cardiologist, Thomas Behrenbeck, M.D., Ph.D., He said that those home cholesterol test kits don’t substitute for cholesterol test performed by medical professional. Often the result of the home test can’t give detailed condition of your cholesterol level and they also don’t offer a whole picture about your cardio condition.
Many of home cholesterol test kits offer only total cholesterol number which this don’t give us clear clue whether our cholesterol level are health or not. To get the whole picture, a good cholesterol test should measure low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglycerides level.
The way on how the use of the kit is also leads to the result accuracy. Before doing the test someone should to fast for at least 9 to 12 hours or the result will not reflect the true condition of your cholesterol level and the result don’t give the accurate information about the impact of exercise or diet on your cholesterol.
Nowdays there are home kits that can measure HDL, LDL and triglycerides whit high accuracy. But again the best option is to follow up the home kit result with further test from your health provider to make sure and to get the whole picture of your hearth condition. So if the result said that your cholesterol level high, then you can threat it as soon as possible.
In general, it would be better of you don’t rely your cholesterol level only to the home cholesterol test kit. Check your cholesterol level in lab regularly. Experts suggest to check it at least once every five years.
